Amazon had plans to build a new Amazon “mega-hub” at Newark Liberty International Airport, drawing resistance from Amazon warehouse workers, some of which were Teamster members. Environmental advocates, labor groups, and small business owners also participated. They held a press conference on October 6 to protest. Protestors wanted to be part of the decision-making process, and they were worried about pollution and negative impacts on the local economy. Others worry about the working conditions of the new jobs, considering Amazon’s history and how the mega-hub could depress local wages. Officials have said the deal would bring more revenue into the area while also providing opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses.
