Despite heavy anti-union tactics, including texts and mandated anti-union meetings, Amazon workers at Staten Island voted to unionize 2,654 to 2,131 under the Amazon Labor Union. This marks the first union ever at the company. High attrition and firings, poor workplace safety considering the pandemic, and a "culture of fear" from constant monitoring have increased interest in unionization. ALU being a union composed of current employees instead of being an outside group was also effective in foiling Amazon’s anti-union messages. Amazon plans to file an objection to the NLRB.
