Google Maps contract workers (employed by outsourcing firm Cognizant Technology Solutions) wrote a petition to oppose a mandatory return to office policy. The workers stated that many of them could not afford to live close to the office due to the high cost of living in Bothell (where the office is) and their low salaries, and commuting to the office became an issue because of the high cost of gas. The contract employees asked for flexibility to come to the office three days a week instead of five, which was the policy for full-time Google employees with office jobs. The petition was supported by the Alphabet Workers Union. On June 2, 2022, the AWU announced that the google Maps contract workers won a 90-day extension on the return to office policy.
